An Alleged Hoax & A Possible Misidentification

First of all, I the USS Lexington was primarily a training vessel. It was very important to Naval Aviation because most Naval Aviators learned Carrier Ops onboard the Lex. The problem is...I believe the Navy used T-2 trainer jets - NOT F-18s for the purpose of training the Naval Aviators. Why the author of the UFO story associated F-18s with the Lex. is a mystery. F-16s and FA18s might have come from Eglin AFB, but had NOTHING whatsoever to do with the Lexington, which was in the process of being decommissioned.

Also, the very idea that F-18s in pursuit of ANY vehicle would fly beneath the Pensacola Bay bridge (much less as Mach 1!) is ludicrous! Its interesting to note that the barge which crashed into the pileons didn't clear the distance! Who would risk death, or court marshall to fly under a bridge that small when they could easily fly just as fast 40 ft. higher?!!!

The Pensacola Bay bridge is three miles long. The "hump" in the middle (where the barges' pass, and the F-18s allegedly flew) is midway in the length of the bridge. If the UFO was approx.250 ft.away from the observers on shore, the F-18s must have been chasing pelicans, because they were on a different trajectory entirely than the UFO. Perhaps 5 to 10,000 ft. past, in fact!

Also, I recall the barge crash. It made the papers. Big time. I don't recall 20 people being killed. At most, it was a major pain in the butt for Gulf Breeze residents who worked across the bridge in Pensacola. They had to commute through Milton to get to work while the bridge was repaired. This letter is quite fanciful, and it is just such letters which cause the entire Gulf Breeze phenomenon to be doubted as true.

I too am an electrical engineer (retired) and may have some insight to Mr. Pisciotta's report. I am really trying to be helpful (as I too have seen something * that could be, in SOME conditions, viewed in similar fashion to his good report).

Mr. Pisciotta could re-review in his mind ... the faint possibility of a poly-metallic Holiday or Congratulations (metallic-mylar) balloon. While the actual size is say 12" X 18" it does look like a black-speck in the distance ... usually tumbles in a sort of erratic but steady way ... reflects the possible sun-light, especially brighter as it gets closer and the 7 PM low sun angle.

And (not to insult the observer) it should be carefully noted that it is nearly impossible (in many cases) for airborne objects to be truly judged in size (or distance). Most important, is the emotion and actual MENTAL zooming (binocular effect that each of us uses mentally as we concentrate on any item of great interest).

We see it as a quarter at arms-length (actually in truth the size is smaller than a pea ... but you can see details on a pea or on a lead-pencil eraser). I too have watched a mylar balloon * approaching from the west ... I had the binoculars in my hand ... I saw it as a dark speck ... the variations of light-and-dark (as it approached) with prevailing wind, often from the west.

I feel that Mr. Pisciotta (as an engineer), similar to me, should very carefully re-review in his mind whether the normal mental ZOOM could have created that very unusual type UFO sighting.

Yet, he should be thankful, even if it were so * , that he NOW has the UFO attitude of increased enlightenment and focus for his thinking and observation. Good Work , Mr Pisciotta, for a far more detailed and accurate report than most I have read. If we had more like you we would have this solved already.

I am not in the UFO field ... but your report struck a resonant chord.
